THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS — In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Verizon Wireless sponsored the Montgomery County Women's Center 2nd Annual "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event today along Market Street in The Woodlands.

Representatives from Verizon Wireless, the Montgomery County Women's Center and the community joined the march alongside men wearing red high-heels to increase awareness of domestic violence and local resources available to survivors and their families. The one-mile route also featured booths hosted by local organizations in effort to share stories of domestic violence, statistics and prevention tips.

"Every nine seconds a woman is abused in the United States. In addition, 50 percent of men who frequently assault their wives also assault their children," said Kay Henze, Verizon Wireless region president for the Houston/Gulf Coast region. "Domestic abuse is a real threat; in fact, it is the second most prevalent crime in the country, and without intervention it can have life-threatening consequences. This is why Verizon Wireless has made the prevention of domestic violence one of our core community platforms."

In addition to the walk, Verizon Wireless held a HopeLine® drive to collect no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories. These phones will be refurbished and are sold for reuse. The proceeds will be used to provide wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence and prevention.

Since 2001, Verizon Wireless has collected more than 5.3 million phones through its HopeLine program and donated more than $5.6 million to organizations that assist those affected by domestic violence.
