BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and ATLANTA — Verizon Wireless, a recognized corporate leader in domestic violence awareness and prevention, donated $25,000 to the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) to support its Women of Color Leadership Initiative. The presentation occurred on Saturday (Nov. 8) at Philips Arena in Atlanta during the national grand finale of Verizon Wireless’ How Sweet The Sound(SM) choir competition.

NNEDV is a membership and advocacy organization of state domestic violence coalitions and allied organizations, representing approximately 3,000 organizations nationwide. The Women of Color Leadership Initiative works to ensure representatives from minority or marginalized communities are actively engaged in program and policy development and helps women of color become leaders in national, state and local domestic violence organizations.

“NNEDV is honored to partner with Verizon Wireless to increase leadership training in the domestic violence field for women from minority communities,” said Sue Else, president of NNEDV. “We’re especially excited that this donation was made in connection with the How Sweet The Sound choir competition, which emphasized the strength and power of communities through song. We’re hopeful to follow Verizon Wireless’ lead and continue empowering leaders with this donation.”

Verizon Wireless collected no-longer-used wireless phones through the company’s HopeLine® program in specially-marked collection bins at each of the How Sweet The Sound events over the past several months.

“NNEDV does very important work on the behalf of domestic violence victims and their advocates,” said Joe Saracino, vice president of marketing at Verizon Wireless. “Verizon Wireless is proud to support the work they do, and we are thankful to the consumers, businesses and organizations in 11 cities that helped make this gift possible by donating their old wireless phones at our How Sweet The Sound competitions over the past few months.”

HopeLine is Verizon Wireless’ exclusive phone recycling and reuse program that collects no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider to benefit victims of domestic violence. Proceeds from the HopeLine program are used to provide wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention and awareness.
