Verizon Wireless Completes High-Speed 3G Network Across Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Verizon Wireless announced today that it has completed enhancements to its advanced 3G high-speed wireless network throughout Indiana, enabling more customers to browse the Internet, download music, send email and multimedia messages and access other advanced wireless services more reliably at even faster broadband speeds.

To make these enhancements, Verizon Wireless installed its most advanced EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) Rev. A (Revision A) hardware and software on the remaining 106 cell sites needing upgrading across Indiana, and it activated an additional 55 EV-DO cell sites in the state. Since the company initially introduced its high-speed 3G network in Indianapolis and Gary in June 2005, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $89 million building out its advanced network across Indiana.

A sound like part of a technical alphabet soup,” said Greg Haller, president—Indiana/Kentucky/Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. “But, here’s what they mean for Hoosiers: All Verizon Wireless customers in Indiana—our network now covers 31,186 square miles of the state and 95.6 percent of the population—have access to a wide array of broadband services on the nation’s most reliable high-speed network.”

The EV-DO Rev. A enhancements are part of the company’s ongoing investment in Indiana. They give customers access to advanced services such as V CAST (which lets them stream video clips, play cutting-edge 3D games and download full-song tracks over the air), get turn-by-turn directions on VZ Navigator(SM) and connect with our newest Push to Talk technology.

EV-DO Rev. A technology also provides the highest speed wireless connection to BroadbandAccess, the company’s business data service, which enables customers to wirelessly access their email and calendars, the Internet and other information via a high-speed connection. BroadbandAccess offers average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second and upload speeds of 500-800 kbps, which means customers can download a 1 Megabyte attachment—the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file—in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $48 billion since it was formed—$5.5 billion on average every year—to increase the coverage and capacity of its national network and to add new services. More than $931 million of this investment has been spent in Indiana since 2000. In 2007, the company invested more than $136 million in Indiana network improvements.
