ALBANY, NY — Verizon Wireless announced today that it has activated the fourth of 13 planned sites that will eventually close a more-than-50-mile coverage gap along Interstate 87 – the Northway – between Albany and Plattsburgh. The new site in the Town of Schroon Lake will provide coverage along I-87 between Exits 28 and 29, and New York State Route 9 between River Road and Frontiertown Road. This site joins three other sites that were activated in 2008.

“We’re excited by the continual progress of closing the wireless gap along the Northway,” said Marquett Smith, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “We’re moving forward on the remaining sites in this project and are committed to getting them built and in service as quickly as we can.”

The Northway project is part of the nearly $130 million the company invested in its Upstate New York Region network in 2008 – the eighth consecutive year the company invested more than $100 million in the region. This brings Verizon Wireless’ total network investment in Upstate New York to more than $1 billion since 2000.
