LITTLE ROCK, AR — Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the most reliable voice and data network, announced today that it is making a $250,000 contribution toward a new, synthetic turf field at Little Rock Central High School’s historic Quigley Stadium. The 108-year-old stadium, which plays host to a variety of high school sports and community events each year, will be renamed Quigley Cox Stadium at Verizon Wireless Field as part of the overall refurbishing project.

By providing the foundation for the new Quigley Cox Stadium at Verizon Wireless Field, Verizon Wireless is strengthening its roots in the Little Rock community and demonstrating its commitment to the area. The new turf allows the stadium to be open to a multitude of new events that weren’t previously possible due to maintenance costs associated with the natural grass surface. Scheduled to use the new field include high school and youth football, soccer, school marching bands, Junior ROTC units and other community events. Quigley Cox Stadium at Verizon Wireless Field will also be the new home for Arkansas Baptist College’s home football games.

“Little Rock Central High’s Quigley Stadium is one of the most historic and enduring symbols of our community,” said Steve Smith, south central region president, Verizon Wireless. “The new field will allow Central Arkansas youth the ability to compete and perform in the same way previous generations did. Verizon Wireless is excited to now be a part of such a long-standing tradition within Central Arkansas.”

Opened in 1901 as West End Park, Quigley Stadium was originally home to the Little Rock Travelers of minor league baseball’s Southern Association. Renamed Kavanaugh Field in 1915, the park was sold to Little Rock Central High School in the 1930s, expanded and renamed in honor of legendary Little Rock Central High’s football coach Earl Quigley.

Home to countless memorable high school events over the past seven decades, Quigley Stadium’s use had been restricted in recent years due to growing demand and increased stress on the natural grass surface. The new turf field will allow the stadium to hold more events without a major increase in maintenance costs. Little Rock Central’s first home football game on the new field will be September 25 against Van Buren.

“This is a great day for all Little Rock high school students and anyone who values the importance of extracurricular activities for our youth,” Little Rock School District Athletic Director Johnny Johnson said. “No longer will we have to tell administrators and coaches no, they can’t use the field. Our only challenge now will be in scheduling all the activities we’ll now be able to host here.”

In addition to the naming rights for the Stadium, Verizon Wireless will also host tailgating and sampling activities at major events as well as phone drives to help support its HopeLine® initiative.
