LITTLE ROCK, AR — Back-to-school time is just around the corner, and Verizon Wireless is helping the Junior League of Little Rock (JLLR) make sure students have the supplies they need when classes begin in August. Launched by the JLLR in 2006, the “Stuff the Bus” campaign supplies local elementary students who are most in need with new pencils, crayons, notebook paper and other essential items so they can pursue their studies with confidence and positive self-esteem. In an effort to help “Stuff the Bus” and ensure those supplies make it safely to school and back each day, Verizon Wireless is providing more than 1,900 local students with brand-new backpacks.

“It is unthinkable that any child should have to start the school year without the basic supplies and tools he or she needs to succeed in the classroom. When the Junior League of Little Rock informed us about the “Stuff the Bus” program, we didn’t hesitate to make a contribution,” said Steven R. Smith, south central region president, Verizon Wireless. “We take great pride in our commitment to the community and are proud to support efforts that assist in the education of our children.”

The four Little Rock schools chosen for participation in this year’s “Stuff the Bus” program were evaluated based on the economic need of the students’ families and participation in the free and subsidized lunch programs. This year’s campaign will outfit more than 1,900 students with supplies their parents may not otherwise be able to afford.

“Our goal with ‘Stuff the Bus’ is to outfit as many children in the Little Rock School District as possible with a full set of new supplies on the first day of school,” said Courtney McLarty, president of the JLLR board of directors. “While our ‘Stuff the Bus’ committee works incredibly hard to obtain these supplies and distribute them to students and their families, we would not be able to help such a large number of students without the help of corporate partners like Verizon Wireless. Their generosity is indicative of their commitment to the city of Little Rock and the children in this community.”
