SAN DIEGO, CA, BASKING RIDGE, NJ and VANCOUVER, CANADA — From CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & Entertainment 2009 in San Diego, Verizon Wireless and Sierra Wireless announced today that the AirLink Helix RT intelligent 3G router, powered by ALEOS™ embedded intelligence, has been approved to run on the most reliable wireless voice and data network in the United States through Verizon Wireless’ open development program. The wireless leader’s open development program provides customers with the option to use wireless devices it does not offer directly, such as the AirLink Helix RT router from Sierra Wireless, on the most reliable voice and data network in the country.

The Helix RT provides quick internet access that meets the needs of a variety of fixed and portable enterprise applications. Helix RT is an ideal solution for providing primary or backup connectivity for field locations, where landline access is not cost-effective or convenient. Multiple connectivity ports, optional WiFi and built in security enable secure 3G connections to clusters of devices, while easy setup and deployment permit temporary internet access for applications like construction, special events, and concerts. By leveraging the comprehensive remote management capabilities of ACEware™ software, customers can virtually eliminate field service visits, significantly reducing total cost of ownership.

“Coupled with the Verizon Wireless network, the Helix RT offers businesses an exceptionally reliable and simple solution for primary or backup data connectivity supporting multiple connected devices,” said Justin Schmid, vice president, Mobile and M2M, for Sierra Wireless. “Powered by ALEOS, Helix provides the critical networking and security features essential for a broad set of business continuity applications. Combined with our comprehensive ACEware remote management suite, Helix is the cornerstone of a reliable, easy-to-use and maintain networking solution for enterprises and other organizations that depend on uninterrupted network access for their day-to-day operation. We’re especially excited to have been approved for use on the Verizon Wireless network, and to make it available to our joint customers.”

“The AirLink Helix RT router from Sierra Wireless is a valuable addition to the wide variety of products approved through our open development program,” said Anthony A. Lewis, vice president of open development at Verizon Wireless. “With built-in connection failover, integrated IPsec VPN and a strong set of tools for remote configuration and management, the Helix RT router provides another option for enterprise customers who rely on Verizon Wireless’ network for business continuity and remote site connectivity.”

Business Continuity
Helix routers provide a configurable WAN/LAN Ethernet port option and a built-in connection failover feature to ensure business continuity. Sensing when the primary connection fails, the Helix router automatically switches to the 3G wireless network. The router then continuously monitors wireline network availability and automatically reverts back to the primary connection when service is restored. This intelligence enables the device to serve as a critical backup for businesses that rely on real-time transaction processing, security monitoring, online customer service functions or any critical high-availability application.

Retail Locations and Kiosks
Helix routers can serve as a central hub of connectivity for field locations requiring a secure, 3G connection to multiple assets. It offers comprehensive routing capabilities, a fully IPSec compliant VPN for data security, and an optional 802.11b/g WiFi access point with WPA and WPA2 encryption to provide secure access for clusters of devices, such as laptops and handheld devices, POS terminals, ATMs, kiosks, digital signs and surveillance cameras.

Verizon Wireless’ open development program is driven by the company’s desire to encourage innovation, give customers new wireless choices, and quickly address opportunities to expand the wireless market. The company continues to provide full-service offerings for business and consumer customers.
