MIAMI, FL — WHAT:
Verizon Wireless will open a Haiti Relief Connection Center in Miami to help the local Haitian-American community connect with family and friends back in Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake there. Twenty Motorola DROID smartphones and other technology will be available for free to make wireless voice calls, text messages, check Facebook and Twitter, and access other internet and news sources. Verizon also is currently working to assist with emergency communication services in Haiti to improve relief efforts and communication to and from the country, and within the hard-hit nation.

 

 

WHO:
The service is available and free to anyone trying to reach family and friends in Haiti. South Florida has the largest Haitian-American community in the United States. Verizon Wireless representatives will be on hand to assist.

WHEN:
The Haiti Relief Connection Center will open January 15, from noon to 9 p.m. The free service will be open subsequent days during store hours: Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

OTHER:
As of January 15, Verizon Wireless customers have donated more than $1.4 million to Haiti relief via text message. To contribute, wireless consumers can send the message "Haiti" via text to shortcode 90999. This will prompt a response text message asking for a confirmation for a $10 donation to the Red Cross International Response Fund. Customers can reply with 'YES' to authorize the donation which will be charged directly to the customer’s wireless bill. In addition, the Verizon Foundation has provided a total of $100,000 in grants to World Vision and Food for the Poor to assist relief efforts.
