BASKING RIDGE, NJ — It’s time for runners, walkers and all health enthusiasts to register for the 2010 Verizon Corporate Classic 5K event, Morris County’s largest fitness event of the season, being held on Thursday, July 15, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. in downtown Morristown. Proceeds from the event will benefit Jersey Battered Women’s Service.

Now in its fifth year, the annual Verizon Corporate Classic 5K event is designed primarily as an opportunity for co-workers to enjoy an evening of fun and fitness in the spirit of camaraderie with their fellow employees while also helping survivors of domestic violence. The Verizon Corporate Classic 5K event is open to corporate teams as well as individual runners and walkers, including students, area residents and their friends and families. Interested participants may register online at www.verizonwirelessclassic.com or call 973-898-9386.

“Verizon’s Corporate Classic is an opportunity to bring together corporate employees and the community for an evening of fun and wellness while also giving back to a worthy nonprofit organization,” said Pat Devlin, president, Verizon Wireless, New York Metro Region. “We want to thank all of those who supported this great cause in the past, and we hope to make this year’s event the most successful one yet.”

In the past, pre-race registration reached the event’s limit of participants, so register early. This year, the limit of entries has increased to 4,500. Once the limit is reached, registration will be closed, and entries will not be taken. If the event does not reach capacity before race day, online registration will close on Monday, July 12, and individuals may register in person through Wednesday, July 14, at the Morristown Running Company at 31 South St. in Morristown. Race-day entries will be accepted if capacity has not been reached at the race site, Pioneer Park of Headquarters Plaza, between noon and 7:00 p.m.

Participants are encouraged to bring no-longer-used wireless phones, chargers and accessories to donate to Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® program. Through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to victims of domestic violence, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country.

Jersey Battered Women’s Service, the beneficiary of the race, is a non-profit organization in Morris County that provides a range of life-saving and life-rebuilding services to victims of domestic violence and their families.

For the past 21 years, Morristown has hosted an annual footrace for employee teams from New Jersey corporations. Verizon has sponsored the race since 2006 as part of its commitment to employee health and wellness. The company operates 31 in-house Health and Wellness Centers throughout the country to provide Verizon employees with fitness equipment and health programs, including nutrition, smoking cessation classes, aerobics, yoga classes, flu shots, mammography screenings and more.

Lexus, the official vehicle of the Verizon Corporate Classic 5K event, will provide the pace car for the race. The Morristown Running Company is providing support services and sponsoring the event’s T-shirts.
