HOLLAND, MI — Victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse in west Michigan will benefit from a $7,700 donation made by Verizon Wireless to the Center for Women in Transition, an organization that provides specialized intervention and treatment services to survivors of physical and sexual abuse.

The grant will be used for billboards placed along highways in Allegan and Ottawa counties to create awareness and reach domestic violence victims who may not have access to other sources which provide information about the services offered by the Center for Women in Transition.

Due to the economic downturn, it's a particularly difficult time for many nonprofit organizations like the Center for Women in Transition, and thus the grant is especially welcome.

“Last year more than 3,000 individuals utilized our services, and we expect that number to grow this year,” said Charisse Mitchell, executive director, Center for Women in Transition. “We are extremely grateful to Verizon Wireless for this grant, which makes it possible for us to reach out to the women and families who need our services.”

“Verizon Wireless has an unwavering commitment to organizations which serve communities where our customers live and work,” said John Granby, president–Michigan/Indiana/Kentucky Region, Verizon Wireless. “It’s particularly important that, in difficult times like these, we continue to support organizations such as the Center for Women in Transition, which do such critical and outstanding work.”

The gift was made possible by Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® program, which converts no-longer-used wireless phones into support for survivors of domestic violence. HopeLine’s national phone recycling and reuse program collected nearly 1.1 million phones in 2009 and has collected more than 7 million wireless phones since 2001 when the program was launched. In Michigan last year, Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine program collected 26,585 no-longer-used wireless phones. Verizon Wireless also donated $63,470 in cash grants to domestic violence agencies in the state.

HopeLine wireless phone donations are accepted at all Verizon Wireless Communications Stores across the nation. Verizon Wireless encourages everyone who plans to donate a phone to HopeLine to make sure service on that device has been discontinued and to erase any personal data on the phone. Phones given to the HopeLine program are refurbished and resold for reuse or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.
