NEW YORK, NY — In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Verizon Wireless NY Metro Region is sponsoring “The Pride of Our Heritage” mural contest that will enable three winners to design large-scale celebrations of their culture and lifestyle to be transformed into murals. The three winning designs, one each for locations in the Bronx, Washington Heights and Queens, will be chosen via public online voting.

The winning designers will be featured in a national arts magazine, enjoy local recognition at an unveiling event and appearances in Verizon Wireless stores in the NY Metro Region and receive $500 in art supplies and a Samsung Fascinate smartphone.

“The Hispanic community is a very large, vibrant and important component of the fabric of New York City. The ‘Pride of Our Heritage’ mural contest will allow new voices to celebrate the richness of the Hispanic-American experience, as well as their traditional culture and lifestyles,” said Pat Devlin, president of Verizon Wireless’ NY Metro Region. “This is a great opportunity for a creative person to make a significant and positive mark in their neighborhood that will be appreciated by all residents.”

Entries, including attached files of their designs and inspiration for them, as well as brief designer biographies, photographs and contact information, must be submitted online at www.MiHerenciaHispana.com by September 15. The attached design file must be in a JPEG, GIF or PDF format and not exceed 3MB in size.

The public will vote on the designs they like best at the same website between September 23 and October 2, with winners being notified on or about October 3. Mural painting in the Bronx, Washington Heights and Queens will take place between October 4 and 15, with unveiling events beginning on October 16.

This Hispanic Heritage Mural Contest is one of a variety of educational and diversity programs supported by Verizon Wireless. With a diverse workforce of 79,000, Verizon Wireless drives workplace diversity by establishing programs to encourage the hiring and advancement of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
