BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and DANA POINT, CA — Verizon Wireless has been named one of the nation’s top 10 technology innovators by InformationWeek magazine for development of a unique sales software system.

In its first time on the annual list, which spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, Verizon Wireless ranked ninth and was the only telecommunications company in the top 50. The InformationWeek 500 list was announced last night during an awards ceremony in Dana Point, Calif.

“It is an honor to receive the InformationWeek 500 award. First, it recognizes the dedication of our company to offering an outstanding customer experience. Secondly, it’s testimony to our Information Technology employees and their partners who all play a critical role in ensuring that we always look for innovative new ways to better serve customers and improve our business through technology,” said Ajay Waghray, chief information officer of Verizon Wireless.

Verizon Wireless was selected for its creation of an innovative sales software system called SHOPP (Streamlined Hybrid Order Processing Path) that is used in the company’s retail stores throughout the country. Since the rollout began, SHOPP has reduced the time it takes to process a customer’s order in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores by 40 percent.

“For 22 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology,” said InformationWeek Editor In Chief Rob Preston. “As we start to emerge from the worst recession in decades, the IT focus is now on driving growth – new sources of revenue, new relationships with customers, even new business models. This year’s ranking placed special emphasis on those companies and business technology executives leading that charge.”
