VERNON HILLS, IL — The Verizon Wireless Communications Store located at 700 East Townline Road in Vernon Hills, Ill., is the fifteenth Verizon Wireless retail location in the nation, and the first in Illinois, to secure LEED Silver Certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

The store’s design optimizes water and energy use, enhances indoor environmental quality and reduces waste through responsible procurement and construction practices.

Among the environmental benefits the store offers:

  • Energy Savings: 50 percent less energy consumption thanks to high efficiency lighting. Energy savings and carbon reductions from an energy management system and Energy Star equipment including sales terminals and HVAC system. Estimated 1,400 gallons per year in water-saving through installation of low-flow plumbing fixtures.
  • Material Reuse: Recycled-content materials used in the store, including in ceiling tiles, flooring and display fixtures.
  • Phone Recycling: The store is a collection point for the company’s long-running HopeLine (R) phone recycling program which collects no-longer-used phones and equipment. The used phones are either refurbished or recycled. With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless donates wireless phones and airtime to victims, and provides funding and other contributions to non-profit domestic violence shelters and prevention programs across the country. Through HopeLine, more than 1.6 million phones have been properly disposed of in an environmentally sound way and more than 200 tons of electronics waste and batteries have been kept out of landfills since 2001. Employees can also recycle paper, glass, plastics and aluminum on-site.
  • Paperless Billing: Customers can save trees while at the store by signing up for My Verizon, enabling them to access their account information online anytime and anywhere.Verizon Wireless’ Green Bill puts account information online, at customers’ fingertips. Customers can view itemized charges on their accounts or make payments all from the website. There’s no need to receive a paper bill in the mail anymore.

“The changes we have implemented in our stores are significant because they impact our business, the environment and our ability to provide customers with an industry-leading experience,” said T.J. Fox, president–Illinois/Wisconsin Region, Verizon Wireless. “By being more energy efficient, we can keep operating costs down and redirect those resources to improve the customer experience.”
