Genesis Women's Shelter And Women Called Moses, Inc. Receive $15,000 Donation From Hopeline From Verizon At The 2011 Super Bowl Gospel Celebration

BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and DALLAS, TX — Verizon Wireless today announced that Women Called Moses Coalition and Outreach, Inc., and Genesis Women’s Shelter were both presented with a $15,000 donation from HopeLine® from Verizon at the 2011 Super Bowl Gospel Celebration (SBGC) in Dallas on Feb. 4. The donation will help both organizations in their mission to provide a safe haven and secure shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Women Called Moses Coalition and Outreach, Inc. is a non profit organization committed to increasing awareness about the growing problem of domestic violence in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. The organization also provides a secure shelter along with educational and job-training services for battered women and their children.

“It is truly a blessing to receive this donation from Verizon Wireless,” said Debra Nixon-Bowles, president and founder, Women Called Moses Coalition and Outreach, Inc. “This donation will allow us to continue on our mission to educate and provide support for abused women and children in the Dallas and Ft. Worth area, and to help empower them with a sense of help, hope and love.”

Genesis Women’s Shelter provides quality safety and shelter to battered women and their children through crisis intervention and short term crisis therapeutics to reduce the occurrence of violence against women and children in the greater Dallas area. The organization is also committed to raising the level of community awareness regarding the pervasiveness and effects of domestic violence.

“We’re proud to partner with an organization like Verizon Wireless, which is so committed to putting an end to domestic violence,” said Jan Edgar Langbein, executive director, Genesis Women’s Shelter. “The families who walk through our doors are escaping unspeakable violence, and our goal is to provide them with all the tools they need. This donation allows us to meet those needs even more so.”

Since the launch of the cell phone recycling program in 2001, Verizon Wireless and the HopeLine program has collected more than 8 million phones, given out more than $10 million in cash grants, and distributed more than 106,000 phones with more than 316 million minutes of free wireless service for use by domestic violence survivors.

Additionally, Voices of Destiny of Greater Zion Church Family of Compton, Calif., winner of the 2010 Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound competition, performed at the SBGC event. Voices of Destiny beat out the best church choirs from 14 cities across the country to be named the Best Church Choir in America and have the opportunity to perform at the 2011 SBGC.
