SPRINGFIELD, IL — Verizon Wireless announced today that it is bringing the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to Springfield by the end of the year. Customers in Springfield will join wireless users in 40 other major markets that are already experiencing the fastest, most advanced 4G mobile network in America. The company plans to offer 4G LTE in more than 145 metropolitan areas by the end of the year, including Bloomington/Normal, Carbondale, Champaign and Rockford. Verizon launched 4G LTE in Chicago late last year.

“How significant is 4G LTE? Our advanced technology is changing the way we all work and play,” said T.J. Fox, president –Illinois/Wisconsin Region, Verizon Wireless. “Today, it gives us the ability to move large files faster and enjoy smooth mobile video conferencing. But, this is only the beginning, and the opportunities with 4G LTE are limitless.”

The HTC ThunderBolt™, launched Thurs., March 17, is the first in a suite of consumer-oriented smartphones, tablets, hotspots and notebooks that will run on Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network by the middle of this year. The new consumer devices join two USB modems for laptops from Pantech and LG in transforming the wireless experience, offering consumers new ways to connect and share their lives at blazingly fast speeds. All of Verizon’s 4G LTE devices are backward compatible and will work on the company’s 3G network where 4G is not yet available.

Since its launch fewer than four months ago, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with 4G LTE modems with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

Verizon Wireless’ 700 MHz spectrum gives the company specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license. The company is building its 4G LTE network with the same commitment to performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized. Verizon Wireless’ consistent focus on reliability is based on rigid engineering standards and a disciplined deployment approach year after year.
