ALPHARETTA, GA — As The Masters quickly approaches, Verizon Wireless is making sure golf fans descending on Augusta, Ga. can share in the excitement with all the speed and reliability they are used to getting from the nation’s largest and most reliable wireless voice and 3G data network. The company today announced that preparations for The 75th Masters Tournament April 7-10 included increasing voice capacity by nearly 40 percent and data capacity by 60 percent at the cell sites surrounding the golf course in anticipation of the crowds.

Typical Masters-week voice traffic is more than 60 percent higher and Short Message Service (SMS) traffic is more than 30 percent higher than usual. During last year’s tournament, Verizon Wireless customers in Augusta issued more than 40,000 text messages per hour.

“With multitudes of media, fans, public safety officers and personnel converging on the city of Augusta, there will be a major increase in wireless activity over a short period of time. We want to ensure everyone in and around the area for this prestigious event has the coverage and capacity needed wherever they go,” said Jeff Mango, president - Georgia/Alabama Region for Verizon Wireless. “Our customers expect their wireless network to work no matter where they are or what is happening, and we are committed to delivering the exceptional service we are known for.”

It’s the Network!
In 2010, Verizon Wireless installed 23 new cell sites and added additional network capacity worth over $190 million in over 279 cities in Georgia including Augusta to enhance services and coverage for wireless customers. Verizon Wireless’ ongoing network investment in Georgia now totals more than $1.8 billion since the company was formed in 2000. In December 2010 the company launched its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless services in 38 markets and 60 commercial airports across the U.S. and recently announced that Augusta will be getting the 4G LTE network later this year.
