BASKING RIDGE, NJ, and LONG BEACH, CA — Verizon Wireless, a corporate leader in domestic violence prevention, presented the Ferndale, Wash. Police Department with a HopeLine® Law Enforcement Partnership Award at this year’s FBI National Academy Associates, Inc. (FBINAA) annual conference in Long Beach, Calif. This award honors the efforts of public safety officials who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and focus on preventing domestic violence and raising awareness in their communities.

The Ferndale Police Department collected more than 1,400 wireless phones this year, which will be donated to the Verizon Wireless HopeLine program. Phones donated to HopeLine are refurbished or recycled in an environmentally sound way, and used to help domestic violence agencies and organizations nationwide, and victims and survivors as they rebuild their lives. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and groups like the Ferndale Police Department, HopeLine has collected 8 million phones; awarded $10 million in cash grants for victim services and prevention/education efforts; and donated 106,000 HopeLine phones with 319 million minutes of airtime to victims, survivors and domestic violence organizations since 2001.

In addition to the award and in honor of the exceptional efforts of the Ferndale Police Department, Verizon Wireless issued a $10,000 HopeLine grant to the Bellingham-Whatcom County Commission Against Domestic Violence (BWCCADV). BWCCADV works to provide leadership in the community’s efforts to prevent domestic violence.

“The HopeLine Law Enforcement Partnership Award honors groups that raise awareness on domestic violence in their communities,” said Gabe Esposito, director of corporate security and business continuity at Verizon Wireless. "Verizon Wireless is proud to honor the Ferndale Police Department for spreading the word on the severity of domestic violence."

Verizon is a recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue. HopeLine from Verizon puts the nation’s most reliable wireless network to work in the community by collecting no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider and turning them into support for domestic violence victims.
