SOUTH BEND, IN — Verizon Wireless announced today that it is bringing the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to Notre Dame Stadium in time for the opening game this weekend with the Fighting Irish and South Florida Bulls.

In addition, the company has activated four new cell sites to enhance coverage for the existing 3G network.

The network updates will ensure that Verizon Wireless fans attending the Saturday afternoon season opener will be able to rely on their wireless phones for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps, exchanging email and text, picture and video messaging as well as making calls during the games.

“Verizon Wireless customers can now rely on blazing fast speeds in Notre Dame Stadium where as many as 80,795 fans attend each game,” said T.J Fox, region president, Verizon Wireless. “Nothing is more important than advancing our technology to accommodate travel and tourism for the state’s economy. With the Super Bowl coming to Indiana next year, we can show Hoosiers that 4G LTE will give football fans the speed they crave.”

Notre Dame Stadium, a packed venue during the college football season, is the second sports venue in the state of Indiana to be covered by 4G LTE. The first was the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which occurred just in time for the racing season that began in May. The city of Indianapolis, which launched on June 16, recently experience expanded coverage for the 4G LTE network outside the I-465 loop.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $65 billion since it was formed – $6 billion on average every year – to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since 2000, Verizon Wireless has invested $1.15 billion on improvements to its wireless network in Indiana.

Verizon Wireless has been rapidly building out its 4G LTE network, currently covering more than 160 million Americans, with plans to bring coverage to more than 185 million Americans by the end of 2011. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

By 2013, Verizon Wireless will have full nationwide 4G LTE coverage everywhere the Verizon 3G network is available today. Visit www.verizonwireless.com/lte for more information about Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network.
