BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless and Metrum Technologies today announced that Metrum’s Utiliwise® Endpoint Communications Module (ECM) is now Verizon Wireless Network Certified.

Metrum’s Utiliwise® is a powerful, highly flexible, true IP-to-the-endpoint technology that leverages existing, well maintained public wireless network infrastructure to facilitate high-bandwidth connectivity for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and Smart Grid applications. Users can easily deploy Utiliwise® without concerns over private network build out, maintenance, or endpoint saturation requirements.

“There are many locations in the United States where investments in expensive network infrastructure for utility applications are not a practical or cost-effective option,” said Michael Brander, vice president, utility and industrial vertical markets, Verizon Wireless. “Smart energy solutions are invaluable in today’s environment and anything that can be done to effectively monitor and communicate data and energy information is beneficial to the market. Verizon Wireless and Metrum can now offer utilities serving these locations all the advantages of high-bandwidth, two-way data communications using any Utiliwise-equipped meter or endpoint.”

“Reliable, robust communications and flexibility are requirements for maximizing the benefits and value of AMI/Smart Grid investments,” said Steve Swenke, president and CEO of Metrum Technologies. “By combining Metrum’s proven Utiliwise technology and Verizon Wireless reliable network, utilities will have the ability to support even the most challenging and data intensive AMI/Smart Grid Initiatives.”
