BIRMINGHAM, AL — Verizon Wireless will present $5,000 to domestic violence shelters in Shelby County and Opelika today on behalf of sorority chapters at Samford University and Auburn University. The sororities earned the awards for the Alabama shelters during #HOPEWEEK, a week-long awareness initiative and grant competition from Verizon Wireless and the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ACADV).

More than 2,500 college students across Alabama signed their support for Domestic Violence Awareness Month during #HOPEWEEK. Verizon teamed up with chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Alpha Chi Omega for the initiative. During #HOPEWEEK, participating Verizon Wireless stores in Alabama and sorority chapters distributed purple awareness ribbons to supporters in communities around the state. In addition, sorority chapters collected signatures for an online cause statement at www.HOPEWEEKAL.com. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. chapter at Samford University and the Alpha Chi Omega chapter at Auburn University delivered the most signatures to each win a $2,500 Verizon HopeLine grant for their adopted ACADV member organization.

The Samford Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter was competing on behalf of Safehouse of Shelby County and the Alpha Chi chapter at Auburn on behalf of the Domestic Violence Intervention Center in Opelika.

HopeLine from Verizon is a phone recycling program through which the company provides refurbished phones to domestic violence victims and survivors and grant dollars to domestic violence organizations. Since HopeLine was launched in October of 2001, Verizon has funded more than $10 million in cash grants for domestic violence organizations across the country and distributed more than 106,000 HopeLine phones with the equivalent of more than 319 million minutes.

To encourage the collection of no-longer used cell phones during #HOPEWEEK, Verizon gave sorority partners an additional five signature points toward the grant competition for each device collected for HopeLine.
