LAUREL, MD — Verizon Wireless is bringing the world’s first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to Roanoke, Virginia on Nov. 17. Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network will be available in 178 cities across the country on Nov. 17 and currently supports 15 devices, including the DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, Samsung Stratosphere™, a Galaxy S® smartphone, the Pantech Breakout™ and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola.

When Verizon Wireless turns on its 4G LTE network in the Roanoke area on Nov. 17, residents in nearby communities including Smith Mountain Lake, Christiansburg, Radford City, Buena Vista City, Lexington City and Rockbridge, in addition to Blacksburg and the campus of Virginia Tech which launched Sept. 1, with 4G LTE devices will be able to take advantage of the nation’s fastest 4G network with speeds up to 10 times faster than Verizon Wireless’ 3G network.

Coverage, Speed and Reliability

As of November 17 when the southwest Virginia area comes online, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network will be available in more than 178 markets nationwide covering more than 186 million Americans. Verizon Wireless was the first to deploy a nationwide 4G LTE network when it launched in December 2010 in 38 cities with coverage available to 110 million Americans. At that time, the company announced an aggressive goal of bringing its 4G LTE network to more than 185 million Americans by the end of 2011. Less than one year later, the company has surpassed its goal.

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has won numerous technology and consumer choice awards. In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless 4G LTE customers from in and around Roanoke should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
