BELLEVUE, WA — While customers made nearly 40% more calls and data traffic was peaking at 25% above normal, the Verizon Wireless network performed at a high level during this week’s snow and ice storms that cut power to hundreds of thousands. Thanks to the presence of backup batteries and generators at Verizon network cell sites, only 3% of the company’s Western Washington sites were offline at any time during the storm, despite power outages at about 20% of company cell sites.
“The power of these storms reminds us all how crucial it is for a wireless company to not only be prepared, but to be prepared to recover quickly,” said Bobby Morrison, president –Pacific Northwest region at Verizon Wireless. “Over the last four days, our network teams have worked round the clock to strengthen our network and deploy assets to keep lines of communication open so customers can count on their wireless service when they need it most.”
