DES MOINES, IA — To continue to stay ahead of rising demand for wireless voice, multimedia and Internet access, Verizon Wireless has expanded its local network in Des Moines, Altoona and Johnston, Iowa by activating three new cell sites.

The Des Moines cell site, located near the intersection of Grand Avenue and 31st Street, improves coverage as follows:

  • North to Interstate 235;
  • South to George Flagg Parkway;
  • East to Terrace Road;
  • and West to 42nd Street

The Altoona cell site, located near the intersection of 1st Avenue North and 9th Street Northeast, improves coverage as follows:

  • North to Interstate 80;
  • South to 15th Street Southeast;
  • East to NE 88th Street;
  • and West to 17th Avenue Northwest

The Johnston cell site, located near the intersection of Merle Hay Road and Northwest 62nd Avenue improves coverage as follows:

  • North to Northwest 78th Avenue;
  • South to 54th Avenue;
  • East to Northwest Beaver Drive;
  • and West to Northwest 94th Street

The new cell sites provide increased wireless voice and data service in Polk County, which empowers more Verizon Wireless customers to rely on their wireless phones for social networking, Internet browsing, downloading apps, exchanging email and text, picture and video messaging, as well as making calls.

These new cell sites are part of Verizon Wireless’ continual effort to expand coverage, increase capacity and enhance the quality of its wireless voice and data network in Iowa. Nationally, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $70 billion since it was formed—$6 billion on average every year—to increase the coverage and capacity of its premier nationwide network and to add new services. Since 2001, Verizon Wireless has invested more than $346 million on improvements to its wireless network in Iowa.
