As Earth Month ends and sustainability awareness activities come to a close on college campuses, students are encouraged to carry the message of environmental responsibility beyond the month of April and into their everyday lives on campus.

According to the EPA, the average American will throw away 600 times their adult body weight in garbage over the course of a lifetime. By making simple changes to their daily routine, college students can help make a change by reducing waste production and natural resource consumption, creating a cleaner environment for our future.

Here are some tips for college students to go green on campus:

Practice “eco-friendly” dining – When heading to the cafeteria, resist the urge to pick up a serving tray. For every 1,000 meals served, 200 gallons of water are needed to wash trays.

Make technology work for you – From submitting papers electronically to doing required reading on your favorite tablet, the less paper used, the greater the environmental benefit. If you have to print, be sure to set your printer preferences to double-sided.

Invest in a travel mug – Using a refillable water bottle or travel coffee mug not only creates a positive impact on the environment, but on your wallet as well. In addition to saving on the cost of water bottles, many coffee shops reward “green behavior” by offering discounts to customers who fill up with a reusable mug.

Clean up the clutter– By the time final exams roll around, desks are filled with cords, cables and no-longer-used electronics. If not recycled properly, these items can harm the environment. Take advantage of programs such as UHopeLine from Verizon, which properly disposes of wireless devices and accessories in any condition from any carrier in an environmentally sound way.

Get outside – As spring arrives, enjoy the nice weather by walking or riding your bike to class. If you’re traveling a long distance, carpool with a friend or use your college’s transportation system to save on fuel (and gas money).

You can make a change for our environment – why not start now?
