OLEAN, NY — Verizon Wireless announced today it will launch its 4G LTE high-speed data network in the Cattaraugus-Allegany area on April 19. Several local 4G LTE sites have already been activated. Residents, businesses and visitors to the area will be able to use their 4G LTE smartphones, tablets, notebooks, laptop modems and hotspots to take advantage of speeds up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network. At launch, 4G LTE will be available in the Olean, Amity, Angelica, Cuba, Ellicottville, Franklinville, Friendship, Gowanda, Hinsdale, Killbuck, Machias and Wellsville areas, and portions of the I-86 and Route 219 corridors. Additional local sites will get the technology over the next several months. This deployment is part of the company’s nationwide rollout of its super-fast data network, scheduled to be complete by the end of 2013.

“We’re excited to continue to expand our 4G LTE network across the Southern Tier and to help local residents, businesses, and government connect faster with each other and with those outside the area,” said Russ Preite, president of Verizon Wireless’ Upstate New York Region. “Our 4G LTE network is revolutionizing the way people communicate. Our customers are increasingly relying on tablets, smartphones and apps to stay organized, connected and entertained. Our 4G LTE network will deliver the best value to those customers by maximizing the performance of their wireless devices.”

In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink – perfect for surfing the Web, streaming video, and downloading large files wirelessly.

As of March 15, Verizon's 4G LTE network covers more than 200 million people in 203 markets across the United States. Verizon Wireless plans to more than double the number of its 4G LTE markets, bringing the total markets to more than 400 by the end of the year. With the additional new markets and continued expansions, the company’s 4G LTE network will cover more than 260 million people in the United States by the end of 2012.

The service is already available in New York State in the New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Utica/Rome, Poughkeepsie/Kingston, Ithaca and Glens Falls areas.

When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, the devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless' 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast. Verizon Wireless' 3G network is the largest, most reliable high-speed data network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their areas.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network was named “Fastest 4G Network Yet” by Popular Science’s 2011 Best of What’s New Awards, and was ranked No. 1 on PC World’s 100 Best Products of 2011.
