TAMPA, FL — More wireless customers in Southwest and Central Florida soon will have access to the nation’s fastest 4G wireless network, when Verizon Wireless expands its most advanced network in the Fort Myers and Lakeland areas on May 17.

Verizon has added 4G LTE (Fourth Generation/Long-Term Evolution) technology on 24 additional cell sites in Charlotte and Lee counties. Communities soon to be covered with 4G LTE include Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Charlotte Harbor, Boca Grande, Fort Myers Beach, Lehigh Acres, Felda, Parkdale and Ft. Myers Shores.

In Central Florida, nine additional cell sites throughout Polk County added 4G LTE capabilities to bring the advanced services to Fort Meade, Polk City, Auburndale, Lake Alfred, South Lakeland and Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.

Verizon Wireless previously launched 4G LTE in the core areas of Southwest and Central Florida, and already covers more than 75 percent of the state’s population with the advanced technology.

Nationally as of May 17, the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network will cover more than two-thirds of the U.S. population in 258 markets, and the company plans to cover more than 400 markets with 4G LTE by the end of the year. The rollout of 4G LTE across Verizon’s entire network footprint is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2013.

4G LTE technology is up to 10 times faster than the company’s industry-leading 3G network. In real-world, fully loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

The 4G LTE network allows streaming videos with no buffering, or downloading and viewing full-length HD movies. Music lovers can download songs in seconds, gamers can take part in multiplayer online action, and social media types can upload photos and posts while on-the-go. Business owners can use the efficiency and speed of the 4G LTE network to boost their bottom line.

“Southwest and Central Florida have had an early taste of the speed and power of 4G LTE,” said Pam Tope, Florida region president for Verizon Wireless. “This expansion will deliver this superior technology to even more area customers and communities.”

The Verizon 4G LTE network was named “Fastest 4G Network Yet” by Popular Science’s 2011 Best of What’s New Awards, and ranked No. 1 on PC World’s 100 Best Products of 2011. For more information on Verizon Wireless products and services, visit a local retail store or go to www.verizonwireless.com.
