GAINESVILLE, FL — More wireless customers in the Gainesville area soon will have access to the nation’s fastest 4G wireless network, when Verizon Wireless expands its most advanced network here later this month.

Verizon is adding 4G LTE (Fourth Generation/Long-Term Evolution) capabilities to numerous new cell sites throughout the region to bring or boost 4G LTE coverage and capacity in eastern Gainesville along SR 20 to CR 234, Gainesville Regional Airport, Alachua, Haile Plantation, Kanapaha Park, Lake Kanapaha, Newnans Lake, Lamplighter, Prairie Creek, Paynes Prairie Preserve, Turkey Creek Forest, Flying Ten Airport, San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park, Dudley Farm Historic State Park, Santa Fe Springs Conservation Area, the University of Florida Agricultural Experimental Farm, and throughout the area west of Interstate 75 northeast of Archer and southeast of High Springs.

Verizon Wireless launched 4G LTE in Gainesville in January 2011 and in most other Florida markets since then.  The company already covers more than 75 percent of the state’s population with the advanced technology.

Nationally, the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network is available to more than two-thirds of the U.S. population in 258 markets across the country and offers more than six times the geographic coverage of its nearest competitor’s 4G LTE network. The rollout of 4G LTE across Verizon’s entire network footprint is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2013.

4G LTE technology is up to 10 times faster than the company’s industry-leading 3G network. In real-world, fully loaded network environments, 4G LTE users should experience data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

The 4G LTE network allows streaming videos with no buffering, or downloading and viewing full-length HD movies.  Music lovers can download songs in seconds, gamers can take part in multiplayer online action, and social media types upload photos and posts while on-the-go.  Business owners use the efficiency and speed of the 4G LTE network to boost their bottom line.

“While our competitors are still trying to bring improved technology to a few major cities, we’ve had our 4G LTE network running throughout Florida for a year-and-a-half and are now focused on connecting more areas with high-speed wireless data access,” said Pam Tope, Florida region president for Verizon Wireless.

The Verizon 4G LTE network was named “Fastest 4G Network Yet” by Popular Science’s 2011 Best of What’s New Awards, and ranked No. 1 on PC World’s 100 Best Products of 2011.
