BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Verizon Wireless will bring in its own pinch-hitting all-star to handle the anticipated increased usage of its 4G LTE network when fans head to Kansas City for baseball’s mid-season classic on July 10.

Customers who are at the game will benefit from further network enhancements on the nation’s largest 4G LTE network, making it easier than ever to share the thrills of America’s favorite pastime with friends and family.  Rolled out in Kansas City in November 2011, the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network will be strengthened with a Cell on Light Truck (COLT) near the stadium to provide additional 4G LTE capacity.  The COLT is a fully functional, generator-powered cell site, which has the same call capacity as a freestanding cell site, and is utilized when Verizon Wireless anticipates extraordinary demands on network capacity.

Verizon Wireless has invested more than $6 billion on average every year to ensure its network is prepared and superior.  This year, baseball fans around the country can take advantage of resulting network improvements in other cities around the country, including:

  • Northside Chicago – Verizon Wireless has installed a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) to expand the historic ballpark’s wireless network capacity.
  • Detroit – Deployed a Cell on Wheels (COW) to boost 4G LTE and 3G capacity in and around the stadium located in the heart of downtown Detroit.  A COW is a fully functional, generator-powered mobile cell site that enhances wireless capacity in a specific location and works especially well in dense areas with large crowds.
  • Miami – Installed 4G LTE and 3G EV-DO base station equipment and connected it directly to the ballpark’s DAS and increased capacity at numerous cell sites near downtown Miami.

These network enhancements are part of the aggressive annual network capital investment program that keeps Verizon Wireless ahead of the growing demand for voice and data services.  Verizon Wireless has invested more than $70 billion in its nationwide network since it was formed.
