MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Verizon Wireless today announced it is bringing the nation’s largest 4G Long Tem Evolution (LTE) network to new communities in southern Minnesota – including the greater Mankato and Worthington areas – as part of the company’s 34 new market launches on Aug. 16.  In addition, Verizon Wireless will expand its 4G LTE network to 38 new markets, including south, north and west of the greater Minneapolis-Saint Paul area.

Customers living in the following communities of Minnesota will now have access to the nation’s fastest 4G network, including new market coverage for the greater Mankato area as follows:

  • North on U.S. Highway 169 to Kasota;
  • East on U.S. Highway 14 to three miles of Janesville;
  • Southwest on State Highway 60 to St. James;
  • And, South on U.S. Highway 169 to three miles south of Amboy.

In addition there will be contiguous coverage from Blue Earth, including Fairmont, on Interstate 90 to the South Dakota border (combined with the Worthington launch)

In the Worthington market area, the 4G LTE network will be available in the following southwestern Minnesota communities:  Adrian, Brewster, Edgerton, Jackson, Lakefield, Lamberton, Luverne, Mountain Lake, Pipestone, Sleepy Eye and Worthington.

The greater Minneapolis-Saint Paul expanded 4G LTE coverage area will include communities south, north and west of the Twin Cities including:

  • South on Interstate 35 including Northfield, Faribault and Owatonna;
  • North on State Highway 95 to Cambridge;
  • West on State Highway 212 from Norwood Young America to Brownton, including the city of Glencoe;
  • West on U.S. Highway 12 from Cokato to Dassel
  • West along State Highway 55 from Annandale to Belgrade.

Verizon Wireless first launched its 4G LTE network in Minneapolis-Saint Paul on Dec. 10, 2010 and has since then has continued to expand in markets across the state including Rochester, Austin, Albert Lea, Duluth, St. Cloud and Moorhead.

“The expansion of our high-speed network will enable customers to use their 4G LTE devices in more parts of Minnesota to stay in touch with family, friends and colleagues, all with speeds up to 10 times faster than before,” said Seamus Hyland, president-Great Plains Region, Verizon Wireless.  “We will continue expanding and enhancing our 4G LTE network in this state and across the country to provide our customers with the best wireless experience possible.”

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network is America’s largest 4G network with coverage available to nearly 75 percent of the U.S. population.  With the new and expanded markets, the company’s 4G LTE network will be available to 371 markets across the United States. By year’s end, the company plans for its 4G LTE network to cover more than 400 U.S. markets.

4G LTE Coverage and Speed

In real-world, fully loaded network environments, Verizon Wireless 4G LTE customers should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.

When customers travel outside of a 4G LTE coverage area, 4G LTE devices automatically connect to Verizon Wireless’ 3G network, enabling customers to stay connected from coast to coast.  Verizon Wireless’ 3G network is the most reliable high-speed data network in the country and allows customers in 3G coverage areas who purchase 4G LTE devices today to take advantage of 4G LTE speeds when the faster network becomes available in their area, or when they travel to areas already covered by 4G LTE.
