What:
Part scientific endeavor…part festival…part outdoor classroom.  Verizon is a title sponsor of the Rocky Mountain National Park BioBlitz 2012, which will bring together hundreds of leading scientists, naturalists and students from around the world this weekend.

The National Park Service and National Geographic Society are teaming up to host the 24-hour BioBlitz plant and animal species count and a two-day Biodiversity Festival.

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE data network and dozens of mobile devices loaned to National Geographic will allow citizen-scientists to capture images and videos and share them in near real time.  The National Geographic’s supported application Project Noah makes images and videos instantly viewable using FieldScope, an on-line interactive map.

Open to the public, participants are invited to work with world-renowned experts to count, map and learn about the park’s diverse ecology.  Additionally, a family-oriented festival will be celebrating biodiversity with over 40 exhibits featuring music, science demonstrations, mobile technology and hands-on activities.

Interview opportunities will be available with senior leaders from the National Park Service, National Geographic Society and Rocky Mountain National Park.  This is the sixth in a series of ten BioBlitzes throughout the country leading up to the centennial birthday of the National Park Service in 2016.
