The Energy Star logo appears on home and office products like dishwashers, refrigerators and computers. But what is Energy Star and what does it mean?

Since the early 1990s, Energy Star, a joint initiative between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy, has been working with companies and consumer organizations to create more energy-efficient homes, offices and buildings.

The first products to get Energy Star included printers and computers, followed soon thereafter by home appliances including refrigerators, lighting fixtures, water coolers and more. In 2010 alone, Energy Star-rated products and technology saved businesses, organizations and consumers in the United States $10 billion in energy costs. Last year, there were more than 12,600 Energy Star-certified buildings across the U.S., including a number of Verizon Wireless Communications Stores.

In 2012, Energy Star announced its third annual Energy Star National Building Competition. More than 3,000 buildings across the country will compete to improve energy efficiency, lower costs and help better the environment. In addition, Energy Star continues to add new, certified products to its line-up and work with organizations to raise awareness on energy efficiency.
