CHARLOTTE, NC — In the wake of Hurricane Isaac, Verizon Wireless officials in the Carolinas have been revisiting emergency plans and equipment needs in case severe weather and flooding also threaten the Democratic National Convention (DNC) today and Wednesday, as experts predict.

“Our team has been meeting regularly with DNC committee and city officials to discuss and prepare for possible flooding and high winds. We are confident we have resources and procedures in place to keep our network strong through the heavy rains being dumped in Charlotte,” said Jerry Fountain, president of Verizon Wireless’ Carolinas/Tennessee region.

Fleets of Cells on Wheels (COWS), Cells on Light Trucks (COLTS), and generators on trailers (GOaTS) are on standby should additional equipment be needed to address power outages without compromising the resources already in place to support the surge in network traffic during the DNC.

“We have already identified what resources from neighboring states will be available should we be faced with power outages in the next few days,” adds Fountain.

Verizon Wireless prepares year-round for natural disasters and other emergencies so customers can rely on the company’s network to keep them connected, even when the unexpected happens. Verizon Wireless’ ongoing intensive investments and preparations – from the construction of new cell sites with on-site backup power to the implementation of comprehensive emergency response plans – have proven critical during emergency situations over the years. Verizon Wireless’ network remained strong during and after recent hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes, floods and other emergencies, enabling emergency response officials and residents to communicate with support services, businesses, family, friends and co-workers.
