WALNUT CREEK, CA — Today Verizon Wireless announced that Jazzlene Herrera from Union City was the First Prize winner of the My Fabulous Quince essay contest in the West.  From a total of 160 semi-finalists, Herrera received the highest number of votes in her participating region and was awarded the First Prize package, which includes a college scholarship, a smartphone and a Verizon gift card. 

Herrera is one of the four My Fabulous Quince First Prize winners, awarded to the top vote recipients in the four participating regions (Midwest, West, South and Northeast) along with the following: Alexandra Barillas from Lockport, IL (Midwest region); Bianca Rosales from Homestead, FL (South region); and Ashley Herrera from Guttenberg, NJ (Northeast region).   

“At Verizon we are very excited to continue supporting local teens with their academic goals, and at the same time keep them up-to-date with mobile technology,” said Russ Preite, region president for Verizon Wireless.  “We also want to thank the thousands of people who cast their votes online and via text to help Jazzlene Herrera win the First Prize in her region.”

In addition to the first prize winners, Grand Prize Winner, Corina Pérez from Chicago,  will also receive a scholarship, smartphones and Verizon gift cards, as well as an all-expenses-paid Quince for up to 100 guests, featuring a special performance by one of the most acclaimed award-winning Latin urban artists of all time, Daddy Yankee.  Pérez received the highest number of votes in all regions.

A voting panel of judges selected twenty teens from each of the eight participating cities and surrounding areas (Chicago; New York; Miami; Dallas; Houston; El Paso, Texas; Los Angeles and San Francisco,) from thousands of entries submitted between June 1 and July 31.  Public voting was open from August 24, through September 2 through online and text voting.
