COLUMBIA, MO — Verizon Wireless, through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine® Program, has donated $3,500 to True North, a domestic violence agency based in Columbia, Missouri. The donation will be used to support ongoing operations and awareness outreach programs of the center. True North will kick off its annual awareness campaign during October, which has officially been designated as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The primary event, designed to raise additional funds for True North’s women’s shelter program, is known as “Purse Passion and Poker”, and will be held on Thursday, October 18 at the Market Place and Columbia Pool and Spa located at 1100 Business Loop 70 West in Columbia from 5:30 – 7:30 PM. Additional information about True North and the “Purse Passion and Poker” event is available on the True North website at: http://www.truenorthofcolumbia.org/.

“Verizon Wireless has been a long-time supporter of True North and its efforts to prevent domestic violence in central Missouri,” said Brendan Fallis, president-Kansas/Missouri Region, Verizon Wireless. “Their efforts will help everyone focus on this important issue and help break the cycle of domestic violence.”

“Once again, we are proud to partner with Verizon Wireless as we mark the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” said Barbara Hodges, Executive Director of True North. “We encourage everyone, men and women alike, to learn what every individual can do to stop domestic violence in our communities. Our partnership with Verizon Wireless will allow us to continue to provide innovative awareness programs and outreach programs to those people who need our help.”

In addition to this grant, Verizon Wireless supports domestic violence agencies around the country through the HopeLine® phone recycling and reuse program.

Since the launch of the HopeLine® phone recycling program in 2001, Verizon has collected more than 8 million phones; awarded more than $10 million in cash grants to domestic violence agencies and organizations throughout the country; properly disposed of nearly 1.7 million no-longer-used wireless phones in an environmentally sound way; distributed more than 106,000 phones with approximately 319 million minutes of free wireless service to be used by victims of domestic violence; and kept more than 210 tons of electronic waste and batteries out of landfills. In 2011, Verizon made more than $225,000 in HopeLine® and Foundation grants to domestic violence prevention agencies in Missouri and Kansas.
