Mobile industry executives and professionals gathered in San Diego last week for MobileCON 2012 to discuss issues facing the industry now and possibilities for the future. There was a wide range of panels and keynotes but a few topics stood out: innovation in the space of Machine-to-Machine (M2M), and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) practices.

Zipcar Chief Executive Officer Scott Griffith and Symantec Chief Technology Officer Stephen Trilling helped kick off MobileCON by emphasizing how mobile has transformed the world of enterprise. Griffith discussed upcoming developments to the Zipcar smartphone app, which includes expanding its functionality to an in-car assistant and registration tool. Trilling spoke in favor of companies embracing a BYOD environment in the workplace.

Central to the agenda on all three days was the topic of M2M. Many companies expressed the importance of connected M2M solutions to industries across the board. Numerex, for example, helped create an M2M wireless solution for a wireless ankle bracelet that remotely downloads data. The company is currently working on the development of continuous alcohol monitoring products for law enforcement purposes.

As mobile enterprise continues to change and expand, a fast, low-latency 4G LTE network will become an integral tool for businesses and consumers. In light of this, Verizon Wireless’ Chief Technical Officer Nicola Palmer announced the expansion of its 4G LTE network to cover more than 410 markets, reaching the company’s goal to bring 4G LTE to 400 markets by the end of 2012 two months early.
