COLUMBIA, MO — The Journey of Hope National Tour will make two stops in Columbia, Missouri on October 18 in an effort to empower local individuals touched by domestic violence share their personal experiences and raise awareness of this social problem during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  The tour partners with the National Domestic Violence Hotline, Verizon Wireless and local domestic violence prevention organizations to bring the tour bus to public events across the country.  In Columbia, Missouri, True North serves as the premier domestic violence prevention and shelter program.

WHAT:                       
“Journey of Hope National Bus Tour” – The Journey of Hope tour allows people touched by domestic violence to video record their own stories on smartphones and tablets to be uploaded to Facebook in order to break the silence   surrounding this devastating social issue.  The event will encourage the public to learn more about domestic violence and the resources available.  Community members can also make a difference by donating their no-longer-used wireless phones or text-to-donate in an effort to support the National Domestic Violence    Hotline and other organizations working to end domestic violence.

Verizon Wireless is a long-time supporter of True North, a domestic violence prevention organization and shelter based in Columbia, Missouri.

Thursday, October 18. 2012 at 11:00 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Verizon Wireless Communications Store, 303 North Stadium Boulevard, Columbia.

Thursday, October 18. 2012 at 5:00- 7:30 p.m.
The Marketplace and Columbia Pool & Spas, 1100 Business Loop 70 West, Columbia – This stop will be held in conjunction with the True North sponsored “Purse Passion & Poker” domestic violence prevention fundraiser.  Live remote opportunities are available.

VISUAL OPPORTUNITIES:  

  • Possible interviews with victims of domestic violence who wish to share public stories in an effort to break the silence surrounding this social problem.
  • Interviews with key Verizon Wireless spokespeople, Journey of Hope leaders and representatives of True North domestic violence prevention program.
