Each January, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) spotlights the most innovative technology for the coming year. With CES 2013 underway, here’s a look back at a few of the technologies that have captivated consumers and tech enthusiasts from the minute they were introduced at past shows.

The personal digital assistant was unveiled by Psion at CES 1984. The term “PDA”, however, only gained popularity when Apple’s then CEO, John Sculley, used it in 1992 when referring to the Apple Newton at CES. Over the years, PDAs became go-to consumer gadgets and were eventually the catalyst for the introduction of smartphones, originally called a “PDA phone.”

In 2005, video on cell phones was an emerging technology trend, and Verizon Wireless introduced V CAST Video at CES that year. V CAST Video started as clips, eventually evolving into full length shows. Today, consumers can watch video using a smartphone or tablet and services such as Viewdini and Comcast’s Xfinity TV Player.

Smartbooks were on everyone’s minds in 2009. Designed to integrate the best features of smartphones and netbooks, these devices were expected to excel as the always-on gadget for teens and younger consumers looking to surf the Web. However, after the debut of the first iPad in April 2010, much of the momentum and excitement surrounding smartbooks faded before the technology fully developed. It appears that smartbooks are poised for a comeback as Qualcomm is set to bring a new and improved version to market soon.

Most recently, the Internet of Things has been the center of conversation at CES. In 2010, a Skype-enabled TV made a big impression while Samsung’s Smart Life devices were the talk of the show the following year. In 2012, more than half of the devices on display at CES were Internet-connected. From smart home appliances to medical devices, connected devices continue to be a central theme at CES.
