Last year, the 90-member Dexter Walker & Zion Movement Choir created a unique sound and creative approach to gospel music to wow audiences as part of Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound gospel music celebration. In return, the Chicago-based choir received a recording contract, $25,000, smartphones and gift cards.

Gospel lovers who didn’t experience last year’s competition live can tune in to TVOne at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday for the 2012 Verizon’s How Sweet the Sound finale special. Hosted by Michelle Williams, the special includes special performances from Dexter Walker & Zion and the regional winning choirs, CeCe Winans, Hezekiah Walker, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary, and Fred Hammond.

The airing of the 2012 event comes one day before the launch of this year’s How Sweet the Sound competition. Starting Monday, church, community and college choirs interested in participating in the country’s most prestigious gospel event can register to take part and be heard.

In its sixth year, How Sweet the Sound pays tribute to gospel music and gives local choirs the chance to showcase their talents to a larger audience. This year’s winner will receive a How Sweet the Sound/eOne recording contract, up to $50,000 in cash and prizes, and the title “Best Gospel Choir in America.”
