If you’re a college student, chances are you’re thinking about your future and wondering how your degree will help you in the working world. Now is a great time to get hands-on experience in your chosen field before you graduate, and one of the best ways to do that is through a fall internship.

In addition to gaining first-hand experience, an internship can help you gain college credits, while providing opportunities to network with established professionals. Best of all, many internships can even lead to job offers upon graduation. According to the National Association of Colleges & Employers, approximately 60 percent of paid interns and 37 percent of unpaid interns received at least one job offer.

Where do you find these opportunities? An internship might be closer than you think. Talk to the people you know; a relative or neighbor may work for a company still seeking interns for the fall semester. You can also use connections at school. Visit the campus career center where you can search for available internships anywhere in the nation, including your college town. Many companies will coordinate a time schedule around your classes so that you don’t have to stress about balancing school and work. And your smartphone also can assist in your search with apps like Monster and LinkedIn

Once potential internships are identified, it’s time to begin the application process by submitting a resume and cover letter. In addition to showcasing your education, achievements and relevant experience, these documents should also highlight your strong writing abilities. A poorly-written resume or cover letter can immediately sink your chances of getting considered for an interview.

Fortunately, your smartphone or tablet can help there, too. Apps such as Super Resume Builder can assist you with building your resume and cover letter. And, for those looking for additional information, check out an app like Best Resume Tips.
