Buying a wireless phone has become almost like buying a car – make, model, color, size and features are just a few of the things to consider. And once those decisions are made, the next question is what to do with the phone you are no longer using.

With more than 90 percent of people over 18 in the United States owning a cell phone, and more than half of all adults with a smartphone, according to Pew Internet Research, there are a lot of phones ready to be upgraded or discarded.

The junk drawer is one solution, and giving the phone to another family member when you get a new one is another.  But there are also other ways to put an old phone to good use, and to help defer the cost of a new phone.

Verizon Wireless has given consumers options to trade in their phones since 2001. HopeLine from Verizon encourages consumers to donate their phones to be turned into support for victims of domestic violence.

In 2011, Verizon Wireless added a trade-in program, through which customers receive monetary value for their old phones. Both of these programs also keep older electronics out of landfills, as they responsibly recycle and re-use the devices.

Beginning this week and running to the end of October, Verizon Wireless’ Device Recycling Program will lock in values for certain iOS devices. Of course, smartphones must be in good condition to receive the full value of the trade-in, which can then be applied to the purchase of a new smartphone or used to pay a bill.
