As she planned the Quince party of her dreams, Alyssa put her wireless phones to good use. “We take for granted how much we can do with phones, and the impact they can have on events like a Quinceañera,” she wrote. With apps like Assistant, teens who are planning a Quinceañera can create a personalized assistant that will help plan and organize meetings, send reminder alerts and connect to the Internet to research Quince party vendors. “Staying organized [kept] me from becoming a Quinceañera-zilla,” she wrote.

A Quinceañera is an important coming-of-age tradition in the Latino community that symbolizes a young girl’s transition into womanhood. For some, celebrating a Quinceañera represents a party filled with fancy dresses, music and friends, but for Houston-area teen Alyssa Linares, her Quinceañera was more than that. It represented an opportunity to face her future by planning a beautiful event by her own power. “A Quince can change a life,” she wrote in an essay.
To help fulfill her dreams, Alyssa – like thousands of teens across the country – submitted essays to enter Verizon’s My Fabulous Quince contest. She became one of 160 semi-finalists around the country, and went on to receive the most votes from the public, making her the grand prize winner. As the grand prize winner, Alyssa received a college scholarship and an all-expenses-paid party for 100 guests, with a special performance by 2012 Latin GRAMMY® Best New Artist, 3BALLMTY. She also traveled to Los Angeles for a special styling session with Jennifer Lopez and received four BlackBerry Z10 smartphones and Verizon gift cards.
