The focus was on innovation in the Big Easy at the 2013 Wireless Technology Innovation Awards held in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter on Oct. 22.

The Southeast Louisiana competition, sponsored by Verizon Wireless, recognizes companies that best showcase innovative ways mobile technology solutions help improve efficiency, cut costs and elevate customer satisfaction.

Between April and August, Southeast Louisiana companies submitted applications detailing the mobile technology methods they utilize in daily operations. Submissions included the utilization of tablets, wireless broadband cards and mobile apps to engage in machine-to-machine communication, remote accessibility and other state-of-the-art business processes.

Banner Automotive Group captured the first-place prize of $10,000, and the runner-up, ChillCo, Inc., was awarded $5,000.

Banner Automotive Group, a dealer of new and used vehicles in the New Orleans area, utilizes mobile technology on a daily basis to help ensure uninterrupted business operations and improve customer experiences. Verizon Wireless MiFis, which provide 4G LTE connectivity to Wi-Fi-enabled devices, allow Banner technicians to access inventory, process orders and ship parts while servicing customers offsite. The devices also help the company maintain connectivity even during power and server outages.

ChillCo, an industrial process refrigeration company, improved its customer experiences by enhancing remote control of its large tonnage rental chillers, helping the company to do everything from ensuring that vaccines stay at the appropriate temperature to remotely maintaining uninterrupted air conditioning for perishable goods.

Verizon Wireless also presented a $1,500 grant to New Orleans’ Idea Village during the ceremony. Idea Village is a non-profit organization focused on supporting and retaining entrepreneurial talent in the New Orleans area through educational services and consulting, among other things.
