Wrench customized a nutritional program on MyFitnessPal to match my activity level; I now follow it religiously. I always have my laptop, tablet or smartphone with me so I can input my meals in real-time, which is key to staying on track. A huge benefit to pairing a Fitbit and MyFitnessPal is that they sync, so my activity is automatically tracked and always up to date. Knowing that my trainer has a direct connection to my nutrition and activity stats keeps me accountable.

Wrench also uses his social networks as a vehicle to connect with clients. Every day he posts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, with fitness advice, home exercise ideas and inspirational quotes. It’s a resource I use on a daily basis to stay motivated and learn new tricks to keep my workouts fresh.

The ability to connect with my trainer in various ways throughout the week has been the biggest factor in my success. Whether through social media or a quick motivational text, he is good about staying connected outside of our sessions. There is not a week that goes by that I don’t receive a text or comment on MyFitnessPal from him giving me a virtual high-five and cheering me on to reach my goals.

It took a team – my trainer, useful apps, a wearable device and my smartphone – to get me to where I am today, but it’s worth every drip of sweat and piece of kale. This approach is truly the reason I’ve enjoyed great success on my fitness journey. My next challenge? I’m using the C25K (Couch Potato to 5K) app so I can join Team Wrench and participate in a fundraising run benefitting Project Open Hand in September. The energy and confidence I have today has helped me embrace my age, feel my best and accomplish things I never thought possible.

Choosing the best path to fitness is different for everyone. My fitness journey began when a certain milestone birthday was quickly approaching, and I knew I wanted to feel better.

For the first time in 15 years, I decided to join a gym. Previously, my “workout” consisted of taking my dog, Rocket, on walks around the block. At Fitness SF in San Francisco, I connected with Brian Wrench, a certified personal trainer with a new method for fueling motivation and accountability with clients – adding wireless tech into his programs.

From day one of my journey, Wrench has been by my side to keep me on track, both in person and through fitness technology. He first had me download the MyFitnessPal app and buy a Fitbit device, so he could monitor my eating habits and activity outside of our sessions. He said, “Social tools help motivate people to get moving outside of the gym, which is important for the other 23 hours of the day we are not training together.” I had no idea how right he was.
