At the new Downtown Dadeland Verizon Wireless retail store in Miami, the company introduced its first free “Wireless Woofshop” to help dog owners care for their furry family friends using smartphones, apps and other technology.

Human and canine guests sat obediently – with an occasional socially-awkward sniff or nibble –for the hands- and paws-on lessons at the smart store presentation bar. They panted over new pet tech gadgets such as GPS trackers, video monitors, fitness bands and more.

Some students howled in delight over the dozens of apps – many of them free – to promote pet safety and health. Verizon Wireless trainer Luisa Santiago covered applications such WeatherPuppy, Petoxins, PetAcoustics and others in English and Spanish.

The pet tech presentation joins a long list of free Wireless Workshops offered in Verizon stores to help customers of any carrier learn how to use their mobile devices.

During the “woofshop,” Verizon also hosted Miami’s Paws 4 You Rescue agency. The volunteer organization visited with several dogs and puppies hoping for adoption. Paws 4 You rescues dogs from euthanasia at Miami-Dade Animal Services, houses them in their no-kill shelter, and then attempts to place them in good homes.

Verizon provided $50 vouchers toward the cost of a new smartphone activation, plus other discounts and deals, for customers who were approved to adopt a dog.

“Pet lovers are very special people. We’re very happy to host and help these dog owners learn about so many new fur-friendly technologies,” said Carlos Toledo, Downtown Dadeland store manager. “We’re also proud to support Paws 4 You and their great efforts to find homes for loving, deserving dogs.”
