I wear a lot of hats: writer, model, talk show host, new media personality... and I could list a lot of 'essentials' that help me survive the day. The one tool, however, I find absolutely indispensable -- hands down -- is my smartphone.
From the moment I wake up, to the moment my head hits the pillow at night, my phone is my window to the world and the thing that connects me to all I want to do for both work and play. It not only makes my life easier, but also remarkably more fun and entertaining.
It's the first thing I reach for in the morning as its preset chirpy alert stirs me awake -- snooze not allowed! -- and I spend a few moments catching up on morning emails and getting all of the information I need to kick-start my day. I always check the weather on WeatherBug, consult my calendar and tap onto ClassPass to look for the closest gym or exercise option. Once my workout is out of the way, I can even rely on my smartphone and easy-to-use app Pretty Quick to pull myself together: it immediately finds a nearby salon to get my hair, nails or makeup done, and I don't even have to call around to find openings!
When I’m traveling, or even when I’m right here in the nation’s capital, I'm always searching for the best new places, top stylists and beauty treatments, trending hotspots and other shareable discoveries. Smartphone apps help me to do it all... and find professionals to help me look my best while doing it.
A huge part of my day revolves around staying connected through social media. I use so many different apps to engage with my followers, like Periscope, Twitter and, of course, Instagram to post selfies and to let friends and fans take part in my adventures... from deciding on which events to cover to helping me choose an outfit to wear. It's great to have the feedback of so many people who care to connect, whether I'm crowdsourcing questions to ask in a midday interview or getting ready for an evening soiree.
Over the course of the day, I know I can rely on Verizon’s network to get me where I need to be. I'm always looking up driving directions, using apps like Curb to help me grab a cab, or navigating public transportation with my smartphone. For transportation assistance alone, I think the smartphone -- and Verizon's coverage -- might be the 20th century's best invention!
We live in a world where the demands on our time can often be overwhelming. When I think about what my smartphone means to me, I realize that it’s the common thread that runs through my life from sunrise to sunset, keeping me connected to all that matters.
Video chat and camera functions are other ways the phone and today's technology keep me on my toes. Meeting face-to-face isn't always an option, but deadlines don't care about distance. With my smartphone, I can connect for a must-have interview with the touch of a button. I use my phone's camera constantly for on-the-go snapshots that add essential images to accompany my lifestyle stories, which I can upload and publish straight from my device with ease.
