Florida 689 Area Code Overlay to 407 / 321 Overlay FAQs

General Information

  1. What is the Florida 689 area code overlay?

An overlay is the addition of another area code to the same geographic area as an existing area code(s). In the Orlando area of Florida, the 689 area code is being added to the region served by the existing 407 / 321 area code overlay to ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers. The 407 / 321 overlay region serves Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, as well as parts of Lake and Volusia counties.

You won't have to change your existing area code or phone number. You'll simply continue to dial or enter the area code and phone number for all calls.

  2. Who's affected by the Florida 689 area code overlay?

Anyone who has a phone number from the 407 / 321 area code overlay region should be aware that the new 689 area code will serve the same geographic region as the current 407 / 321 area code overlay region.

The 407 / 321 overlay region serves Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, as well as parts of Lake and Volusia counties. The portion of the 321 area code serving Brevard county is not affected, and will not receive the 689 overlay. See the map below of the 407 / 321 / 689 overlay area.

  3. When will the Florida 689 area code overlay begin?

Beginning June 4, 2019, new phone lines or services may be assigned numbers with the 689 area code. If you have a 689 area code, you must enter the area code and phone number on all calls or the call won't be completed. For customers with a 407 or 321 number from the 407 / 321 area code overlay region, you'll simply continue to enter the area code and phone number on all calls.

  4. Will the Florida 689 area code overlay affect my service?

No, if you have a 407 or 321 number from the 407 / 321 area code overlay region, you'll simply continue entering the area code for all calls. The price of a call, your plan and coverage area, and other rates and services will not change because of the additional overlay. All local calls will remain local.

  5. What will I need to do to prepare for the Florida 689 area code overlay?

For customers with a 407 or 321 number from the 407 / 321 area code overlay region, in addition to continuing to enter the area code and phone number for all calls, you should also complete the following items:

    • Continue to identify your phone number as a 10-digit number (area code and 7-digit phone number), and continue to include the area code when giving your number to friends, family, business associates and customers.

    • Ensure that all services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment recognize the new 689 area code as a valid area code. Some examples include:
      • Life safety systems and medical monitoring devices

    • The price of a call, coverage area or other rates and services
    • Calls that are considered local now will remain local calls
