General Information

  1. What is the BlackBerry operating system (OS)?

    BlackBerry is a mobile operating system originally created by Research In Motion (RIM). RIM now goes by the name BlackBerry. The BlackBerry name refers to the unique physical keyboard design on early devices that resembled the fruit of the same name.

    Widely popular in the business world, BlackBerry is best known for its email features and BlackBerry Messenger (BBM™).

  2. How can I find out which BlackBerry OS version is on my device?

    The steps to find the current OS version vary by device. Below are general instructions that work for most BlackBerry devices. For detailed instructions about a specific device, please check the User Guide.

    Instructions for some newer BlackBerry devices:

    1. From the Home screen, scroll to and select Settings.
    2. Select About to display version information.


    Instructions for most older BlackBerry devices:

    1. Select the Options icon on the Home screen. (It may be in a Settings folder, depending on your theme.)
    2. Select Device.
    3. Select About Device Versions to display version information.
  3. How do I update my device to a newer version of the BlackBerry OS?

  4. How much does it cost to update my BlackBerry OS?

    You aren’t charged for the update to your BlackBerry OS. However, data charges may apply according to your data plan.

    BlackBerry World is BlackBerry’s digital storefront where you can download apps, games, music, videos and themes.

BlackBerry 10

  1. What is BlackBerry 10?

    BlackBerry 10 is a mobile OS launched by the BlackBerry company (formally named Research In Motion) in 2013.

  3. Is BlackBerry 10 available for all BlackBerry devices?

    No, BlackBerry 10 is only available for certain devices. Devices that currently run on an older version of the BlackBerry OS aren’t capable of updating to BlackBerry 10.

  4. Can I update my device to BlackBerry 10 from an earlier version of the OS?

    No, devices with the BlackBerry 7 OS or earlier aren’t able to update to BlackBerry 10.

BlackBerry 7

  1. What is BlackBerry 7?

    BlackBerry 7 is a mobile OS created by the BlackBerry company (formally named Research In Motion). It originally launched in April 2011, and a 7.1 version update was released in January 2012.

  2. What are the features of BlackBerry 7?

  3. Is BlackBerry 7 available for all BlackBerry devices?

    No, BlackBerry 7 is only available for certain BlackBerry devices. Devices that launched with a previous BlackBerry OS version aren’t capable of running BlackBerry 7.

  4. When can I update my device to BlackBerry 7 or 7.1?

    This depends on which device you have. Refer to the Advanced Devices - Software Updates page to see if your device can be updated.

  5. Will I still be able to use my apps if I update from BlackBerry 7 to BlackBerry 7.1?

    Yes, however you may need to reinstall* certain apps. For more information about a specific app, visit the BlackBerry World store.

Troubleshooting

  1. I’m trying to sign in to my BlackBerry Internet Service Account, but I’m getting this error message: “The User ID and Password provided are invalid. Please re-enter your User ID and Password and try again.” What should I do?

    First, verify that you’re entering the correct User ID and password. If you can’t remember your password, you can have a new one sent to your device:

    1. Go to the BlackBerry website.
    2. Click Forgot Password?
    3. Enter your User ID in the User name field.
    4. Click Request Password.

    A new password will be sent to your device, which you can use to sign in to your BlackBerry Internet Service account.

    Note: Remember to change your password once you have successfully signed in to your account.
