Call Forwarding FAQs

This page explains our Call Forwarding feature, how much it costs, how to start and stop forwarding your calls, and how to troubleshoot your experience.

General Information

  1. What is Call Forwarding?

With Call Forwarding, you can forward your mobile calls to another phone number, like your home or office number.

You can set up Call Forwarding to automatically forward all calls to another number, without making your mobile phone ring first. You can also have the call go first to your mobile phone, and if you don't answer or the phone's in use, the call will be forwarded to another number.

Call Forwarding is available on all plans.

Watch our How to Set Up Call Forwarding video for more information.

  2. How much does Call Forwarding cost?

If you don't have unlimited minutes, you'll be billed for all forwarded calls according to your plan. You'll be billed just like you would if you answered the call from your mobile phone, even if the calls are forwarded to a landline.

There's no monthly fee for Call Forwarding on most plans, but a fee may apply on some older plans. If you have a plan that includes long distance, long distance isn't charged on forwarded calls.

  3. How do I forward calls?

You can turn on Call Forwarding from your mobile phone:

    • Forward all calls immediately (mobile phone won't ring) - Call *72 + the 10-digit number that you want to forward your calls to (e.g., *72-908-123-4567).

    • Forward calls when there‚Äôs no answer (mobile phone will ring first) - Call *71 + the 10-digit number that you want to forward your calls to (e.g., *71-908-123-4567).

You can also turn it on from your computer and through the My Verizon app. Refer to our How to Use Call Forwarding page for step-by-step instructions.

  4. How do I stop forwarding calls?

You can turn off Call Forwarding from your mobile phone by calling *73. You should hear a confirmation tone or message.

You can also turn off Call Forwarding from your computer through My Verizon. For step-by-step instructions, refer to our How to Use Call Forwarding page.

  5. Can I forward my calls to another number if I don't have my phone with me?

You can turn on Call Forwarding from a computer through My Verizon.

However, in order to complete the forwarding process, you'll be required to enter an Online Authorization Code that we'll send to your mobile device as a free text message. In most cases, you must have your mobile phone with you to receive that code and verify your identity.

If you're an Account Member on your account, you may be able to send the Online Authorization Code to the Account Owner's phone instead. For instructions, go to the Turn off Call Forwarding from your computer section of our How to Use Call Forwarding page.

  6. Can I use Call Forwarding while I'm outside of the Verizon Wireless network?

You won't be able to set up Call Forwarding if you're outside the Verizon Wireless coverage area or traveling internationally.

However, if you set it up before you start roaming, Call Forwarding should continue to work while you're traveling.

  7. Are there any restrictions on what number I can forward calls to?

The phone number you're forwarding calls to must be 10 digits long. So even if you're forwarding to a local number, be sure to include the area code.

Calls can't be forwarded to an international number.

  8. Does Call Forwarding also forward text messages?

No, Call Forwarding won't forward text messages you receive on your mobile phone, only calls.

If you set up Verizon Messages (Message+) on your phone, you'll be able to read your texts and reply to them online.

  9. I activated Call Forwarding on my phone. Why are people getting a busy tone when they call me?

If callers are receiving a busy tone, you may want to check that the call was forwarded to the correct phone number. Sometimes additional buttons are accidentally pressed while setting up Call Forwarding. If that happens, the number won't be recognized.

Set up Call Forwarding again from your mobile phone by calling *72 plus the forwarding phone number, including the area code (e.g., *72-555-555-5555).

You can also edit the number you're forwarding calls to online from the Call Forwarding page in My Verizon.

Note: Calls can't be forwarded to international numbers.
