Data Boost FAQs

General Information

  1. What's a Data Boost?

A Data Boost is extra high-speed data the account owner or account manager can buy to help the account’s lines avoid slower connection speeds.

When you buy a Data Boost, what the extra high-speed data is used for depends on your plan:

    • Above Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited,* the Verizon Plan Unlimited and Connected Device Unlimited Plan - You can buy a Data Boost for a line on your account, to resume mobile hotspot's 4G LTE speed for that line.
    • The new Verizon Plan (shared data plans, e.g., S, M, L) and Just Kids Plan - Buying a Data Boost adds 1 GB of 4G LTE speed data for the account's general device use, including Mobile Hotspot.
    • Unlimited with 5G Ultra Wideband (5G Jetpack only): Buy a data boost to add 50GB more of 5G Ultra Wideband data and 5GB more of 4G LTE data to your 5G Jetpack.
    • Prepaid monthly plans (except unlimited) - You can buy add on data for your general device use, including Mobile Hotspot. Visit our prepaid FAQs to learn more.

To check your plan name, log into My Verizon online or the My Verizon app.

*Data boosts aren't available on Go Unlimited.

  2. Why would I want to buy a Data Boost?

If your shared data account or 1 of your account members on an unlimited plan reaches the plan's allowance of 4G LTE high-speed data,  slower connection and download speeds result. A Data Boost can help.

    If you have:

Above Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited, the new Verizon Plan Unlimited and Connected Device Unlimited Plan - When a line on your account reaches your plan's monthly allotment of Unlimited Mobile Hotspot data use, there are no overage fees, but that line connects at reduced speeds (up to 600 Kbps) until the end of the bill cycle. A Data Boost gets your Mobile Hotspot back up to 4G LTE speed.

The new Verizon Plan (shared data plans, e.g., S, M, L) - If you reached your monthly data limits and enabled Safety Mode, you won't be charged for data overages. But until the end of the bill cycle, all lines on your account are connected at reduced speeds (128 Kbps) for all use, including basics like viewing a web page or checking email. Buying a Data Boost returns your account's general and Mobile Hotspot use to 4G LTE speed for a 1 GB duration per Data Boost.

Just Kids – This plan comes with Safety Mode automatically enabled, so no overages are charged. Instead, your child's smartphone connection speed slows to up to 128 Kbps when the 5 GB/month data limit is reached. A $15 Data Boost returns the Just Kids line’s use to 4G LTE speed for a 1 GB duration for the rest of the billing cycle.

  3. Who can buy a Data Boost?

You must be the account owner or account manager on 1 of these plans to buy a Data Boost:

    • Above Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited (Data boosts aren't available on Go Unlimited)
    • The Verizon Plan Unlimited (no longer available to be added to accounts)
    • Connected Device Unlimited Plan
    • Just Kids
    • The new Verizon Plan (shared data plans, e.g., S, M, L)
    • Unlimited with 5G Ultra Wideband for 5G Jetpack
  4. How much does a Data Boost cost, and how much data do I get?

The cost and size of the Data Boosts you can buy depend on your plan:

    • Above Unlimited,
      Beyond Unlimited*
    • The Verizon Plan Unlimited
    • Connected Device Unlimited Plan
    Just Kids

    The new Verizon Plan

    (shared data plans, e.g., S, M, L)

Unlimited with 5G Ultra Wideband (for 5G Jetpack)

    Size of each Data Boost  5GB 1GB 1GB 50GB 5G/
    5GB 4G LTE
    Cost per Data Boost  $35 $15 $15 $35
How many you can buy per bill cycle Up to 20 per line  Up to 5 per line Up to 25 per account Up to 20 per line

*Data boosts aren't available on Go Unlimited.

  5. If I go over my unlimited data allowance, will a Data Boost speed up my regular data use?

What you can use a Data Boost for depends on your plan:

    • The new Verizon Plan (shared data plans, e.g., S, M, L), Just Kids plan – Adds 1 GB of 4G LTE speed data to the account for all device use, including mobile hotspot.
    • Beyond Unlimited, Above Unlimited, the Verizon Plan Unlimited and the Connected Device Unlimited Plan - A Data Boost returns only mobile hotspot use to 4G LTE speed for the line for which it was purchased.

For all unlimited plans, your device speeds may be temporarily prioritized behind other Verizon Wireless customers in times of congestion if during the current bill cycle you've used more than:

    • 22 GB of data on your line on Beyond Unlimited
    • 75 GB of data on your line on Above Unlimited
    • 15 GB of data on the new Verizon Plan Unlimited
    • 15 GB of data on the Connected Device Unlimited Plan
    • After 5 GB of data on the Just Kids plan, Safety Mode applies and keeps you connected at 2G speeds.
    • After 50 GB of 5G Ultra Wideband data or 15GB of 4G LTE data on the Unlimited with 5G Ultra Wideband plan for 5G Jetpack

This prioritization may result in slower download speeds compared to other Verizon Wireless customers' experience on the same cell site at that moment. Buying a Data Boost for your line won't affect how your data is prioritized.

  6. How do I buy a Data Boost?

To buy a Data Boost either:

    • Go to My Verizon online - Go to My Usage, choose a line and click Get More Data.
    • Open the My Verizon app on your phone - Go to the Data Hub and tap Add a Data Boost.

If you don't see this option, you may not be eligible to buy a Data Boost.

  7. Does my Data Boost expire at the end of the month?

The Data Boost's expiration date depends on the plan you have:

    • Beyond Unlimited, Above Unlimited, the Verizon Plan Unlimited, the Connected Device Unlimited Plan, Just Kids, Unlimited for 5G Ultra Wideband - Your Data Boost expires at the end of your current bill cycle.
    • The new Verizon Plan (shared data plans, e.g., S, M, L) - Any unused portion of your Data Boost is added to your pool of Carryover Data and expires at the end of the next bill cycle (e.g., a Data Boost bought during your June bill cycle expires at the end of your July bill cycle).

To see your bill cycle dates open My Verizon or the My Verizon app and choose Bill from the top menu.

  8. Is my Data Boost shared across all the devices on my account?

Whether the Data Boost is shared across all devices on your account depends on your plan:

    • Above Unlimited, Beyond Unlimited*, the Verizon Plan Unlimited, the Connected Device Unlimited Plan - The Data Boost only provides 4G LTE data for mobile hotspot use on the line you bought it for. If you need mobile hotspot data for more than 1 line, you need to buy a separate Data Boost for each line.
    • Just Kids - The Data Boost provides extra high-speed data only for the Just Kids line you bought it for.
    • The new Verizon Plan (shared data plans, e.g., S, M, L) - Your Data Boost is shared across all lines on your account.
    • 5G Unlimited with Ultra Wideband: The Data Boost provides extra 5G and 4G LTE data on the 5G Jetpack line only.

*Data boosts aren't available on Go Unlimited.
