Samsung Galaxy S4 Settings

We'll show you how to use some of the most common Settings on your Samsung Galaxy S4. Learn where to find important information about your phone, like the Device ID and MAC address. Sync accounts between your phone and other devices. Adjust time, date, font and display settings for your needs. Learn how to turn Near Field Communication (NFC) on and off, as well as use it for quick in-store payments.

  1. Adjust display, brightness and font settings

    1. From a Home screen, navigate: Apps > Settings.
      Note These instructions apply to Standard mode only.
    2. Tap Display.
    3. Tap any of the following to adjust:

     

    Adjust Brightness Settings

    1. Tap Brightness.
    2. Adjust the Brightness as necessary then tap OK.
      Note To adjust automatically, tap Automatic brightness (enabled when a check mark is present).

    1. Tap Font style then select an option (e.g., Choco cooky, Cool Jazz, etc.).
    2. Tap Font size then select an option (e.g., Tiny, Huge, etc.).

    2. Select an option (e.g., Dynamic, Standard, etc.) then tap Done.
    3. Tap Screen timeout then select an option (e.g., 15 seconds, 10 minutes, etc.).
    4. Tap Auto adjust screen tone.

  2. Using Quick settings

    The quick setting buttons (located in the Notification panel) provide fast and ready access to separate device functions.

    1. Where available, swipe down on the Status bar (located at the top) to reveal the Notification panel.
    2. To view all available quick setting buttons, tap the Quick Settings icon Quick Settings icon (located in the upper right).
    3. To rearrange quick setting buttons:
      1. Tap the Edit icon Edit icon.
      2. From the "Set quick setting buttons" section, tap and drag the button to the preferred location.
        Note The Notification panel displays up to 10 "Active Buttons."
    4. Tap a quick setting button to enable (green) or disable (blue) a function (e.g. Wi-Fi, Location, Screen rotation).

  3. Change account sync settings

    If you're not receiving email and app notifications, follow these steps to check your account sync settings.

    Caution Frequent account synchronization can have a negative impact on battery life.

    1. From a Home screen, navigate: Apps icon Apps > Settings.
      Note These instructions apply to Standard mode only.
    2. Tap the account type (e.g., Cloud, Facebook, Google, etc.).
      Note If unavailable, tap the Menu icon Menu (located at the bottom-left) then tap Switch to list view.
    3. Tap the account.
    4. Turn the sync settings on or off as applicable.

    Caution When Airplane Mode is on, Verizon network voice and data services won't work, but Wi-Fi can be used.

    1. With the device powered on, press and hold the Power button.

  7. Manage interruptions

    Note The Interruptions feature allows sound/vibration (for phone calls, messages, etc.) to be turned on or off as preferred.

    1. From a Home screen, navigate: Apps > Settings.

    2. Tap Sound and notification.
      Note If unavailable, tap the Menu icon Menu (located at the bottom-left) then tap Switch to list view.
    3. Tap Do not disturb.
    4. Tap the Do not disturb switch (located in the upper-right) to turn on Note or off Note.
    5. To allow certain interruptions when Do not disturb is turned on:
      1. Tap Allow exceptions.
      2. Tap the Allow exceptions switch (located in the upper-right) to turn on Note.
      3. Tap any of the following to enable or disable:
        Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
        • Alarms 
        • Phone calls
        • Messages
          Note When Phone calls and/or Messages are enabled, tap Calls and messages from then select an option (e.g., All, Contacts only, etc.).
        • Events and reminders 
    6. To set a schedule for Do not disturb mode:
      1. Tap Set schedule to enable or disable.
        Note Enabled when a check mark is present. 
      2. Tap Days then select the preferred day(s), then tap Done.
      3. Tap Start time then adjust the start time then tap OK.
      4. Tap End time then adjust the end time then tap OK.

  8. Accelerometer rotation setting

    • 3D Accelerometer Rotation is a feature that allows flexibility in how the content is viewed on the screen. Simply turn the device from vertical to horizontal (or horizontal to vertical). The device senses the change in orientation and automatically adjusts to fit the screen.
    • Camera, album, music player, videos, web browser and many other apps take advantage of this feature.

  9. Using tap and pay

    Note Notes:

    • When NFC is turned on, you can use the tap & pay feature to pay for items just by touching your phone to a reader at a checkout register. If your device does not have a payment app, you can browse Google Play for payment apps.
    • To use Tap & pay, NFC must be enabled.
    • To Download and Install apps, refer to Download and Install Apps.

     

    Caution This feature manages payment apps. The Tap & pay option does not apply to Android Beam and won't include certain apps such as money transfer apps.

    1. From a Home screen, tap Apps (located in the lower right).
      Note These instructions apply to Standard mode only.
    2. Tap Settings.
    3. Tap More networks.
      Note If unavailable, tap the Menu icon Menu (located at the bottom-left) then tap Switch to list view.
    4. Tap NFC.
    5. Tap Tap and pay.
      Note All activated wallets are added under "Tap and pay".
      Note If multiple wallets are activated, a user can at any point change the default by going to "Tap and pay" and update selection.

  10. Setting up Near Field Communication (NFC)

    Near Field Communication (NFC) allows the transfer of data between devices that are a few centimeters apart, typically back-to-back.

    Note NFC must be turned on for NFC-based apps (e.g., Android Beam) to function correctly.

    Caution NFC may not function properly with the use of a third-party battery. To ensure functionality, only utilize the Samsung designed battery with Near Field Communication printed on the battery label.

    1. From a Home screen, navigate: Apps > Settings.
      Note These instructions apply to Standard mode only.
    2. Tap More networks.
      Note If unavailable, tap the Menu icon Menu (located at the bottom-left) then tap Switch to list view.
    3. Tap the NFC switch to turn on Note or off Note.

      Note If unavailable, tap the Menu icon Menu (located at the bottom-left) then tap Switch to list view.
    3. To use network-provided values, select the following:
      Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
      • Automatic date & time
      • Automatic time zone
    4. If not using network-provided values, perform the following to adjust date & time manually:
      1. Tap Set date.
      2. Adjust the date then tap OK.
      3. Tap Set time.
      4. Adjust the time then tap OK.
      5. Tap Select time zone.
      6. Select the time zone.
      7. If desired, tap Use 24-hour format.
        Note Enabled when a check mark is present.
      8. Tap Select date format.
      9. Select the date format.

  13. Changing DTMF tones

    If you're calling into an automated dial-in system (e.g., voicemail) and your dialpad entries aren't being recognized, view this info.

    Note Dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) tones are used by automated dial-in systems such as voicemail or where prompts are used to navigate.

    1. From a Home screen, tap Phone Home screen Phone icon (located in the lower-left).
      Note These instructions apply to Standard mode only.
      Note If unavailable, navigate: Apps > Phone.
    2. Tap the Menu icon Menu (located at the bottom left).
    3. Tap Settings
    4. Tap Call.
    5. From the Other call settings section, tap DTMF Tones.
    6. Select one of the following:
      • Normal
      • Long
